Meet the Bright Futures Chiropractic Team

Meet Christina
Christina and Dr. Grier hiking in New Zealand

With a long history of headaches, since Christina was eleven years old, regular chiropractic care has been the most effective treatment she has received. “While I was studying at the University of Iowa, my headaches became everyday occurrences. Several people suggested I see a chiropractor, and with a great referral from one of my classmates, I had my first chiropractic adjustment. I began to feel better and my headaches diminished,” Christina remembers. “But I think the most important lessons that I learned was that I have the ability to recognize how my body responds to stress and that there were better choices I could make to keep myself healthy and headache-free.”

Throughout Chris’s chiropractic education, the Griers heard many stories about how chiropractic care changed people’s lives. “And our lives changed too,” says Christina. “Slowly at first, but soon regular chiropractic care, healthy eating, and exercise started to characterize our personal lifestyle. We developed a love for cooking and entertaining, and our reputation for serving tasty, healthy food is well-known among our friends and family. There’s always something new to try!”

With a Masters degree in Social Work, Christina’s education included emphases on community/organization practice and public health. Her professional experience has provided a strong background for her new position with Bright Futures Chiropractic, previously working with the National Marrow Donor Program, American Cancer Society, Iowa Child Health Specialty Clinics, and Arizona Dental Association.

To unwind and relax, Christina enjoys knitting, reading, napping with their two cats, Jerome and Tori, and Sudoku puzzles. “Chris and I love being outdoors, hiking, camping, biking, walking, running…it is a great way to be active, connect with nature, and spend time together.”

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to support and encourage others to make healthy changes in their own lives,” says Christina. “One of my favorite experiences was a hiking trip to the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. It was so exhilarating to accomplish that trip, but it wasn’t an easy hike. I think our own health journeys are very similar to a difficult hike – there are challenges to making changes in your life, but with the motivation and support to keep going, the end result is something that you feel really good about.”

Meet Hannah, Chiropractic Assistant

HannahHannah Swartzentruber brings personal experience to her position with Bright Futures Chiropractic. She describes herself as "one of those skeptics of the chiropractic practice. It seemed as though people who went to a chiropractor were constantly going in for treatments. I didn’t understand why you would have to go to a doctor so many times in one month. Yet, the process intrigued me."

Hannah had been dealing with a lot of lower back pain as well as frequent headaches that had the tendency to make her nauseous and even made it hard to work productively. So after doing a bit of her own research, and inquiring about different chiropractors, she decided to check out Bright Futures Chiropractic.

Dr. Grier’s Exceptional Wellness Class was her first experience at Bright Futures and it gave her a much deeper understanding of how chiropractic care not only helps with aches and pains, but also how caring for the nervous system is essential to achieving exceptional wellness. Hannah described the experience, saying, "I walked in not quite knowing what to expect, and walked out feeling confident that I was in good hands."

It wasn’t long after starting care that her pain diminished and the headaches went away. "I became well educated on how wonderful chiropractic care is for my health and well-being. I grew to know and admire the staff and am now privileged to be a part of the Bright Futures team," she says.

When Hannah is not in the office, she helps as a youth leader at her church and is an integral part of the worship team. When she’s not there, you’ll find her with a piano, or a camera at her fingertips, "I have a love for the arts that flows creatively, mainly through these two forms."

Hannah embraces the mission of Bright Futures Chiropractic, stating, "I firmly believe in keeping one’s mind, body and spirit in a state of wellness. Chiropractic care is one excellent instrument to help attain this."

Her motto: It’s not just a pain reliever; it’s a way of wellness!

Dr. Chris Asks some important questions of interest to Kalona residents - Chiropractor Kalona Dr. Chris Asks...

Can someone who has had back surgery receive chiropractic care?
Yes. Rest assured that we will avoid the surgically modified areas of your spine. However, what we find is that surgical interventions will often produce spinal instability above or below the involved level. This is will be the focus of your chiropractic care.
What is the significance of "growing pains?"
Chiropractors know that aches or pains at any age mean something's not right. In fact, many children go through stages of growth without aches or pains. So while "growing pains" may be common, they're not normal. That's why our Kalona chiropractic practice sees lots of children. A chiropractic checkup for your child can often help detect and correct problems that are more difficult to correct in Kalona adults.
